Tere, that's beautiful! Do you grow lots of veggies in containers?? Heat is so high here containers dry out really fast, my orchids do well because of all the rain & most of them aren't in soil they have the roots hanging down. have you tried strawberries? Yes I do Beth. I harvested a crop of sweet potatoes I grew in one container. Currently I have tomatoes, those are in the grey pots in left of picture, chives, strawberries, peppermint, dill, parsley, green onions and lettuce. I love the flowers too and they bring the bees which help my veggies grow. The big leaf tall plants left of the chair are sunflowers. Those are only 3 weeks old! Containers work well, and I've used them in really hot climates too but usually in those climates you need to water twice a day. Here, once a day does it. But they do dry out quickly. Strawberries....my area is the strawberry capital of the world. Seriously, the berry crop here is just under $500 million a year. So obviously, the climate is perfect. I grow the berries for the squirrels. I'm an idiot I know it but they so love them. I have lettuce too. I grow some for me and some for the bunnies. I found that if I plant a certain lettuce for the bunnies, in a separate container...they leave my other stuff alone. I love to container garden. No weeds like in beds, easy to water, I don't get muddy. When crop is harvested just dump that soil and plant a new crop. I've done the bed gardening when I had room but my little patio is all there is to my back yard. I have a huge front yard but I don't want food growing out front so I am content with this little area. Living in a retirement community, someone will water for me if I'm gone for awhile. Most residents here are quite elderly. They don't want to garden but they like visiting mine so they're happy to water and enjoy it. They often stop by during the day to "get their garden fix". That makes it more fun for me because it makes others peaceful and happy. They go nuts over the gladiolas. I personally don't really care for them but I grow them for my little neighbor ladies. They get to cut them and take them home. Works for me. Gardening, even in containers is good therapy for high strung personalities. :o). Thanks for asking Beth, obviously I'm a little over the top but it's a challenge just to see what will grow. Tere Pia's of Pleasant Valley
