Has anyone had a total hip replacement? I'm going to need this soon & I'd like to talk to someone who has had this already. I'm a BIG baby when it comes to pain, also how long till I can back to basket making & work again?

Beth,
No, I haven't had it done and don't know anyone close to me who has.
I just wish this weren't so. No surgery is fun.
You're not a baby, anyone would feel the same way.

Beth, so sorry to hear that you will be needing surgery. I do know a few customers who have had the surgery and now say that they should have done it years ago. Of course today the technology is so much more advanced in doing this type of surgery that people are recuperating a lot faster than before. I say that if it really is starting to affect your quality of life, then go for it. While the pain of surgery may be more during the first few days, the pay off may be that you can then enjoy your life as if nothing was ever wrong. I wish you well!!!

Beth I think we are all baby's when it comes to surgery. My dad it done a couple of years ago, but as he is much older than you, his rehab took a bit longer. Plus his was from a fracture which may determine what needs to be done versus a "regular" replacement. Ask lots of questions. You will need to go to some form of rehab for a while, most likely so you can learn to walk again. Yes there will be pain. But like they say -"no pain no gain." Keep us posted! Lea

TERE,
THANKS for asking! That' so nice of you to remember!!

HOPEFULLY it will be postponed, only because I have a sciatic problem on the same side & am having a series of cortisone epidural shots starting on May 5th. I had to wait till I finished a big convention that is being delivered on May 3. If I'm lucky most of the hip pain will have come from the sciatic... Meaning the hip injections I have a few months ago worked!

I've never had sciatic problems but my best friend has and it seems to be very, very painful.
She injured her hip/back moving a washing machine which was full of water. She's cute but not too bright :o).
I know she does daily floor exercises to stretch things out and it does relieve the knotted up pain thing she gets from time to time.
Well May 5th is right around the corner so hopefully you'll get this all behind you, no pun intended, be right as rain and all will be well.
I'll be thinking about you.
Keep us posted

Tere,
Thanks so much for asking & remembering! (I can hardly remember yesterdays dinner!!)
Anyway, I had a series of cortisone epidural shots, that did for the most part take away the pain of the sciatic. I guess in my mind I was hoping that it would also help the pain in my hip... no such luck.
I have just recently heard about a new procedure called Micro Hip Arthroscopy. It's the latest advancement for old people like me with aching hips that says it can get people back on their feet in hours!!
It's not a total hip replacement, but it can trim or remove cartilage, repair & sew ligaments.

I'm not sure if this is my answer BUT I'm certainly going to research this much more before I go ahead with anything much more evasive & PAINFUL.

BTW... Still need my left knee done.. I'm just scared & keep putting it off. I know there is never a good time to do it & I also know summer is the best time (slowest biz)but I seem to always have something better to do.

If anyone want to read the article I have about that surgery, just let me know.

How about you start with the knee and once that's done and you can feel the relief, you might feel better about the hip surgery.
Personally speaking, the knee surgery was a mild inconvenience for just a short while and then you're up and running again.
I know no surgery is to be taken lightly but really the knee was no big deal.
Three teensy weensy little holes where they insert the camera and the surgical equipment. So tiny I didn't even need any stitches. Just a bandaid. You'd need a magnifying glass to see the scars. Short recoup time. 14 days, two weeks, 1/2 a month. They give you drugs! I didn't want to take them but my doc told me if I took them I'd be more apt to move about faster and do the needed excercises.
Go for it.
You'll be happy to did.
Hugs.

DRUGS! I think I'l be calling the doc today!!
No, really ...I have been thinking about it.

My little office assistant that comes back to work during the summers when she is home from school, is a swimmer, in fact she's training for the Olympics & has a full scholarship just had the knee surgery done 3 weeks ago. But she now has to go to therapy 4 x a week for a few weeks! First off, I really don't have the extra money for my co- pays for the therapy. My co- pay is $50 for each session. I know it needs to be done, so I guess I will give a call.. Thanks for pushing me into it! The drugs helped..LOL :-)

>>>The drugs helped..LOL
Yes, I thought that might do it.
As to the expense...yes I understand.
Perhaps you can go one or two times, tell them to show you everything you need to do and then do them yourself at home. I'm not anti-therapy but it's just possible it's a money making thing and you can get by on your own. That's what I did. Although I was fortunate, my insurance would pay for it...I just didn't have the time to go. I was a single mom of four and working full time.
Since your assistant has just had this done...get her to show you what exercises she did in therapy.
You're a brave girl. You can do this.

If your knee is just getting scoped (the 3 or 4 little holes), go for it... Both my knees have been through that simple surgery... it was the reconstructive surgery that was slow to recoup.. but even that was not overly painful: just hard work...

Beth,
My sister has had hip replacement surgery at the early age of 42, due to arthritis and the fact that nothing was left of her joint. The end result is fantastic. She did a lot of research as to what type of replacement she wanted and who would do it.

The healing process was not easy, as the physical therapy you HAVE to do starts on day two in the hospital and continues from there. Not to scare you, but to be honest, she was in quite a bit of pain initially but would not trade the end result for anything. She has total mobility, including sitting cross legged and riding. In fact, the Dr. said riding was one of the best things she could do.

There was a specific method used that is better for not dislocating the hip after healing and also leaves a smaller scar. I don't remember exactly what it was right now, but I can ask her if you want to know at some point. This was about 1 1/2 years ago and was cutting edge at the time.

My sister is getting revved up to do the second hip soon, so you have to believe the result was worth the effort. It is major surgery, to be sure, but so much better than even 5 years ago. In your place I would do my knee first so you have that stability as you begin the therapy with the hip. It would be bad if you couldn't use your knee for support. I have another sister who has done both knees arthroscopically and it was not bad from the stand point of pain or recovery.

I'd be interested in reading the article on Micro Hip Arthroscopy. Can you send me the link or the article?

Good luck on your decisions. Just make one and go with it. You will be happy with the end of pain and restricted mobility...like Tere says...there are DRUGS!! LOL!

Seriously, I'm so happy you did it. I hope the recouperation time is minimal and you'll be pain free soon.
