This is a topic dear to my heart. Many of you probably know this, but for those who don't:

It's important that people know that pet shops get their puppies from "large commerical breeders" - this is a nice way of saying "puppy mill".

Puppies from these mills are often sickly. They come from parents who are caged from birth, bred continously until death, and never let out of their tiny cages for all of their lives. They suffer from painful conditions caused by neglect or filthy surroundings and never know love.

Most of these mills are in Lancaster Pennsylvania and Missouri. Conditions in the places are enough to make any compassionate person cry.

Please, tell everyone you know to never buy a puppy from a pet store.

Pet stores can only stay in business if consumer demand continues. If someone you know wants a puppy, tell them to see a reputable breeder or adopt from a shelter. Thousands of dogs are available for adoption and may otherwise be put down.

Been there, done that, before we knew about such things. We had one puppy that fortunately the vet was aware actually had parvo and he saved her. Now we only purchase from a recommended breeder. I won't even go into a pet store because I hate to see those poor animals. Lea
